MUSICAL STORY
WITH ORCHESTRA

The tradition of musical storytelling dates back hundreds of years and continues to this day. It is a story told by two voices: the narrator using words, and the orchestra using music.

Both stories and music have the power to connect human beings emotionally, and together the effect is multiplied. This alliance allows the audience to inhabit the images of the story, to give them substance.

Sometimes, an orchestra seeks to tell the story of the opera or theatrical music it is performing. At other times, music helps illustrate a traditional story, and thus a creative musical tale is born.

It is an original way to introduce unknown musical works or to enhance stories through music.

PETER AND THE WOLF

With the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande

Composed in 1936 for a children’s theatre production, Peter and the Wolf is a musical tale that introduces young audiences to the instruments of the orchestra.

The story, written by the composer Prokofofiev himself, recounts the adventures of Peter, a young boy who ignores his grandfather’s advice and tries to catch the wolf. Our hero is helped by a bird, a cat, and a duck. After many adventures, everything ends happily with the captured wolf being taken to the zoo.

Each character is represented by an instrument.

Casilda interacts with the children and brilliantly brings each character to life.

THE EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY OF PEER GYNT

With the OLG Lancy-Geneva Orchestra conducted by Roberto Sawicki

The story is that of Peer Gynt, a young Norwegian peasant, a braggart and teller of tall tales, who travels through fjords, mountains, deserts, and oceans, and only at the end of his journey, in the twilight of his life, does he realize that true happiness was within his reach, but he failed to see it.

The story, rewritten and narrated by Casilda Regueiro, is accompanied and illustrated by musical interludes. The Lancy-Geneva Orchestra, under the artistic and musical direction of Roberto Sawicki, performs some of the most famous themes from this stage score in a more intimate version for strings.

Accompanied by the Terpsycordes Quartet, Xavier Dami on piano and Damien Bachman on clarinet

A little boy is bored to death despite having a room full of toys. He asks his mother to tell him a story. His mother makes him a proposal: ‘You play, and I'll make up a story based on the toy you choose and what you do with it. Agreed?’ Thus begins a magnificent journey in which mother and son, music and storytelling come together to create wonderful images. Each new toy is illustrated by music and inspires a story as beautiful as it is surprising, evoking the atmosphere of One Thousand and One Nights.

BABA YAGA

As part of the OSR Family Concerts and under the direction of Aziz Shokhakimov, this concert immerses audiences in the world of Slavic folktales, with two stories about the witch Baba Yaga narrated by Casilda Regueiro to the music of Prokofiev’s Seventh Symphony. The first recounts the adventure of the young Vasilisa, who receives a magical doll from her dying mother. Her cruel stepmother sends her to Baba Yaga’s house to fetch embers to rekindle the fire. Thanks to the doll, she overcomes all the impossible trials. In the second story, Katerina goes to work for Baba Yaga to save her family from hunger. Her four sisters hide beneath her dress and help her using their gifts. They discover that the witch is an enchanted tsarina, who is freed when the youngest defeats her at chess. A gripping tale that explains the origin of Matryoshka dolls.
